Introduction to Jacobean Crewel Embroidery, designed by Leslie Mehard Brady Image

The Stumpwork Butterfly by Judy Jeroy is part of the free projects offered through the National EGA website and will be our August program.

The instructions are available through the EGA Free Project page: https://egausa.org/free-stumpwork-butterfly-chart/.

You will need to enter name and email address to download the PDF.

The finished size is no larger than 4.375 inches wide by 3.25 inches tall.

Stitching Techniques:

  • Buttonhole

  • Irregular Satin Stitch

  • Padded Satin Stitch with sequins

Supplies:

  • Chenille Needle size #26

  • Embroidery Hoop

  • Embroidery Scissors

  • Lighting and Magnification, as needed

  • Fine tip Micron Pen (to trace the design on the ground fabric)

  • A lightbox or a window with natural light for transferring the design

Here's what you'll need:

  • 9 x 9 inch square of tight weave linen or twill (no holes). This will be the foundation fabric. You can also use broadcloth, denim or other firm fabric. A different option would be to use a lighter-weight foundation with a muslin backing.

  • DMC Memory Wire or Kreinik Wired Braid [This will be supplied by Laurie.

(Judy also suggests that wrapped floral wire could be used, as could thin copper wire or silver wire. Or one could wrap a thin piece of chenille pipe cleaner with thread.)

  • DMC Rayon thread – 7 or 8 colors

  • DMC 6-strand Cotton – 1 color

  • Beads for body of butterfly – one 7mm, five 3mm, and three #11s

  • Sequins for spots on wings – 4mm and 6mm

Please add your progress or finished project in the comments!
